Simple Steps to Successfully Purchasing Your Very Own URL!

Allison GobleComment

Want to purchase your very own URL but don’t know where to begin? I’ve been there too! Tons of different websites are competing to get you to purchase your URL from them. Their homepages show off all their shiny features and options, possibly using words you have never heard or understand. After looking through lots of these pages and reading oodles of conflicting information online from “How to Buy a URL” searches, and of course learning from my own mistakes, I want to share with you a simple way to successfully creating your very own URL! Although the wonderful World Wide Web provides many ways to go about this, I’m going to share with you how I manage my URLs. It’s worked for me and I hope it does for you too!! So… I’ve typed up each and every step I go through every time I purchase a URL to help you purchase yours! If these steps help you, make sure to leave a comment with your new URL and/or any advice you would give others wanting to create their own URL.

NAME IT & BUY IT! {How to Purchase Your Own Domain}

  • Visit GoDaddy.com (I personally use GoDaddy to manage my own URLs, so this is what I am recommending for you. They also have a 24/7 customer service support number if you need any assistance at any time!)
  • Type in the URL you would like without the .com at the end (Example: “sudiebumps”) Make sure whatever name you chose is spelled correctly and exactly what you want it. If the URL is available, double check the spelling, and then click “continue”. If it is note available, keep trying different URL options until you find one that you LOVE that is also available.
  • Prices vary with different special promotions throughout the year. Just make sure you don't purchase like a $5,000 URL or something crazy like that! (Trust me, some URLs with certain keywords go for BIG bucks!!)
  • I also wouldn't bother with purchasing any of the other .us, .net, .info, .org, etc URLs, as you only need one and a .com is more than likely the best for you.

GoDaddy Step 1: Protect My Personal Information

Selecting one of these options is not necessary, but is very helpful to protect your personal information (Home/Mailing Address, Personal Phone Number, E-mail, etc) from being directly associated with your new URL. I would personally suggest the “Privacy Protection” option. This is a once a year fee that is renewable every year when you renew your domain.

GoDaddy Step 2: Build My Site / Host My Site

If you are just purchasing a URL and want to host it with another site (example: wordpress, bluehost, squarespace, etc.) you do not have to select either of these. Make sure no option boxes in this area are checked. We are simply going to skip this step.

GoDaddy Step 3: E-mail

This is another optional add-on that we are going to skip as well. Make sure the “No Thanks” option is selected. Later on, I will walk you through how to setup a FREE custom e-mail address using your new URL that can be forwarded to another e-mail account. (Example: Customers can e-mail Renee@SudieBumps.com but it will actually arrive in your current e-mail account or another FREE e-mail account you setup to use for your site.) Click “Continue to Cart”

GoDaddy Checkout Step 1: Review Your Current Order

Assuming you completed the steps above, your URL should show on the screen. Next to it, you should have a drop-down “Term” box. You want to select how many years you want to purchase the URL and pay for today. If you are just starting a business or website, I would suggest purchasing “ONE YEAR” and then simply renewing it after the year is up.

Some other recommendations may be listed below the items already in your cart. If you have a promo code, you can type it in, and if not, simply overlook these options and click “Proceed to Checkout” in the Total Cost box or at the bottom of the page.

GoDaddy Checkout Step 2: Billing & Payment

Simply setup a GoDaddy account with a login/password. After that, type in any additional account information and billing details. You should have the option to pay via credit card or PayPal. (If you are provided an option to sign up for automatic billing during checkout, you will automatically be charged next year when it is renewal time! If you change your mind before then, make sure to log into your GoDaddy account and cancel the renewal option.)

GoDaddy Checkout Step 3: Place Your Order

Make sure to look over everything for correctness before going to the next page.

GoDaddy Checkout Step 4: Thank You

You are now a proud owner of your very own URL! Hope that was as easy and stress free as you had hoped!
